Jon was both dramaturg and director on my new version of Cinderella for Chichester Festival Youth Theatre in 2024. This involved regular meetings throughout that year, with initial discussions as to how to retell this age-old story for a new audience leading to analysis of scene structure, feedback on drafts and later notes during rehearsals to extend, amend or clarify particular story beats, lyrics or dialogue.
Throughout this process, Jon was enthusiastic, encouraging and generous, able both to ask the big questions and to focus on the smaller detail. His notes were always constructive and delivered in a positive and supportive manner. He was unfailingly respectful of what I wrote and sensitive to the process, but also shared articles and information as ‘provocations’, to help me to develop my ideas and to inspire me to create the most complex, nuanced version of the script.
I thoroughly enjoyed working with him — and would draw on his expertise for every script I wrote, if I could!
